What is the significance of your name and number?
This is actually my second derby name, but it fit better than my other one. Octopi are my favorite animal (I have 2 octopus tattoos) and at the time I was teaching math and went on some long ramble about prime numbers and why they are the best. Matched up with a prior discussion about Autobots, Octopus Prime was born. I chose 151 not because of rum, but because it’s considered a lucky number – it’s the 36th prime and is also a palindrome. I also wanted a number that could be signaled by a ref using only one hand.
How did you get involved with roller derby?
I played a lot of really high level team sports growing up, but kind of gave it up when I got to college. I was bored and needed something to do and saw a poster for a local league that looked fun. I was always a terrible skater as a kid and really struggled learn how to skate well enough to play. Now I teach other newbies how to skate and play roller derby – I love the sport and I want everyone else to love it too!
Tell us a fun fact about you!
I have a 2nd place National Championships medal for USARS Roller Derby.
